Special Needs
We recognize we are all God’s children and He has a special place and purpose for us. This is especially true for our children and adults with special needs. We offer a place for them to learn and experience God’s love. The Lighthouse Special Needs ministry offers a weekly class on Sunday mornings during our 10:30 worship service, as well as, a basketball league, Vacation Bible School classes, and morning and evening respite care.
Sunday Morning
Our students range in size and age, but all are excited to learn about God. We use a curriculum which is specifically designed for our students. A typical class session experiences God and His Word through Bible lessons, crafts, music, and prayer time. Our teachers and assistants have years of experience as parents, educators, and therapists.
Vacation Bible School
In recent years, thousands of children have attended VBS at Mt. Horeb. Typically scheduled during a week in June, VBS offers an exciting way for children to learn about God. This includes our children with special needs and abilities, too. We offer 2 classes in the evening session designed to provide all that VBS offers, but in an environment that fits our kids best. Watch for VBS announcements each spring and register online.
Basketball
This special league has grown to include 50+ children and young adults in the Lexington County area and the surrounding communities. Created as a way for youth with special needs to participate in a basketball program with others of similar ability, the league offers a uniquely designed recreation program. Youth with intellectual and physical challenges, including those who use wheelchairs, can participate. On the court assistance is provided by coaches and assistants, as needed. Games and practices are held weekly during the months of January and February. Contact Sally Garner to register at 356-8394 or esalgarner@sc.rr.com.
Respite
The Day Program is designed for young adults who are no longer in school. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm for games, crafts, and lots of other fun activities while parents get some free time. Contact Sally Garner with questions at 356-8394.
The Evening Program meets once a month on the third Thursday from 5pm to 8 pm and is for children, teens, and young adults. For information please contact Sheila Gear at 753-8902 or Beth Heaton at 356-8571.
